Very Berry Goodness

Hmmm........... before I start what I really wanted to talk about today, I just had a weird thought....... I looked at my motime profile picture and looked at me wearing my finished Eris which I absolutely love...... I just realized that the entire winter passed and I didn't wear it once and if you asked me where it was in my closet, I would have to admit that I have no idea.  For the moment, that's kind of freaking me out because I have no idea where it could be.  I've worn my other knit winter sweaters throughout the winter but I have not seen or stumbled across that one in ages.  Yikes.....

My little spinning project from the other day turned into this little baby skein of an unplied single......... it's pretty bad and inconsistent spinning but I still love my little baby skein:

Spinning 101 - Skein #1

I just found out about some short wheel spinning courses that will be taught (very locally for me) in July and in August and one of them coincides with my vacation time prior to when we will actually be leaving town.  I want to take it just to see.  Hubby is supportive of me taking it.  I know it will cause a few problems because his sister with her husbands and kids will be around that week and of course, we want to see them out in Chilliwack (an hour out of town for us) so a spinning course smack in the middle of the afternoon would certainly interfere with all of that.  But he said, we can make it work.................. so we'll see.

I'm making nice progress on my Norwegian Woods Shawl.  I love the berry colour of the yarn.  It's so pretty.  I took indoor pictures so the colour quality isn't terribly good.  The first picture is pretty close but the second one is way too dark.  I'm into Chart B, nearing the end of the first repeat (in the picture I had just started Chart B).

Norwegian Woods Progress

Norwegian Woods Progress

It's a lovely, lovely project.  I'm enjoying it very much and it's nice to see some progress.  I've been working on it a little bit each and every night.

I do have to start diverting my attention now though to getting ready for the Victoria Fibre Fest.  I have taken most of the week off from my jewelry and related creations and just letting myself play with my drop spindle and my knitting.  But.... it's time to get real again.  I've made some commitments to myself and others to have certain things done and ready for that event that I'd better just get in the groove again.

Oh yes, and I am officially published now.  My first magazine article is out.  It's in Belle Armoire Jewelry. I haven't received my own copy yet but I took a quick peek at it in my local bead store and they had copies of it.  It looks great except that from the quick glance that I gleaned yesterday, one of the projects has instructions but they didn't actually publish a picture of what the finished product would look like so that's a bit silly.  It may be that it shows up on another page with reference to where the instructions will be.  I'll have to take a closer look when I get my own copy.  Unfortunately, they give a preview of what's inside the issue but they aren't showing my projects in the preview so I can't even send you there to take a peek.  This was very exciting for me and I can't wait to show it off.  I was also invited to submit other deigns for future issues in particular the fall issue which has a July 15th submission deadline.  My wheels are spinning.

And to go with my current spinning lust, I put up a new spinning bookmark in my shop, along with a variety of other bookmarks and cell charms (there's a sewing bookmark that's new and a cell charm with a "hungry kitty" charm.

SpinningWheelBookmark3

That's it for the moment............ enjoy the rest of your week.  I'm determined to finish one sock for my SAM5 pair of May socks.  We'll see how it goes.

Monday - Yawn.....

A busy weekend has come and gone.....  The show was a bit of a dud............ way too quiet.  In November one day, we fell hostage to the snow.  I think this time, we fell hostage to the nice weather.  Everybody wanted to be out and gardening and not inside looking at stuff.  I made my table money back and little bit extra.   I'm not complaining but I guess I could have been out in the garden, too.  It was still fun and I did enjoy myself.  And if I had packed it in early when everybody else was jumping ship, I wouldn't have made back my table money.  All of a sudden there was this little flurry of an activity and I sold a bunch of stuff.

Yesterday, aside from having a lazy morning knitting on Norwegian Woods - I'll get a progress shot of that tonight, I ended up doing a bunch of running around in the afternoon.

While the Little Miss was at a birthday party, I went bedding plant shopping and when I came home my summer 2008 flower tower was born:

Flower Tower - View 2 - May 25, 2008 Flower Tower - View 1 - May 25, 2008

There are 32, mostly trailing, bedding plants spread throughout the 5 layers of the flower tower and in addition there is one Ivy Geranium sitting in the center top.  I've had varying degrees of success.  Some years, my mix of plants just works beautifully and others I don't quite get that lush fullness that I'm striving for.  It's always fun to plant it and tend to it though and see it grow and fill in.  I took a lot of time and care in planting it this year so I'm hoping that this one will be a good one.

I still am obsessed with the spinning bug.  I've been practicing once again on both of my drop spindles.  my biggest hurdles right now are the fact that I try to draft too hard sometimes and actually break apart my fibre.  My second issue is the fact that I find it hard, especially on my Snowflake spindle, to get it spinning for more than just a few seconds.  I also have a hard time with it not having notches.  I've just been playing with miscellaneous bits of fibre that I've had hanging around for a while now.

Spinsanity Spindle

Unfortunately, I think my resulting yarn was getting worse as I was progressing rather than better.  I think what's underneath the top layer in many ways is nicer, thinner and more even yarn.  The last bit, I was having real problems getting it to work for me.  I'm almost out of this bit of fibre so I'm not thinking I'll do much with it aside from just saying "oh, it was worth a try".

Here is my other spindle and same with this one............. the top layers look worse than what's beneath.  Maybe I was trying too hard?

Spindle One

I think I'm doing better with my "original" first spindle that my enabler friend helped me buy a couple of summers ago at a local little outdoor event.

Did I show you little Miss Ladybug?

Ladybug Cell Charm

Or my stretchy anklets?

Strethcy Tri-Colour Byzantine Anklet

I have this one and a red and white one in the store and a purple and white one will soon follow once I get some pictures taken.  This anklets are fun.  They are stretchy so they slide on and off over the foot and ankle.  The coloured rings are rubber and that's what gives them the stretch.  The intertwined metal rings are stainless steel.  I enjoy making these very much but they are dainty and the rings are tiny so they are quite time consuming.

Have a great week.  I'll try to be back soon to show off my progress on Norwegian Woods.  I love that shawl and I have finished my first lace pattern.  I'm now onto chart B which is a very simple to follow/keep track of chart.

Floral Fantasies

It's that time of the year.............. planting and gardening time.  I love my plants and I do enjoy gardening - to some extent - I do very well at the beginning of the season and as the summer wears on, I often lose that enthusiasm for the watering and the daily care and maintenance a garden requires.  I guess the good thing is that our garden is postage stamp sized and I mostly enjoy container gardening.  I usually do one big "flower tower" of a hanging basket.  That one didn't get done last weekend but my inlaws bought us these 2 big half barrels - they aren't the little kind..... they are the big honkin' ones.  So last Sunday, I set out to buy some plants and here are the results of all my work:

Barrel Planter #1 Barrel Planter #2

The first is Barrel #1 and it was well planned.  Once the plants grow up and the colours of the blooms meld, I think it will be quite beautiful.  Barrel #2......... well, what can I say - it got all the leftover petunias and lobelia and the spike in the middle so we'll see how that one turns out.

Tomorrow is craft show day.  I hope it goes well.

And look at my newest purchase:
EZ Up Tent

I'm now ready and set for any outdoor events I might be setting up shop at this summer.

Have a wonderful weekend.  Mine will be busy but that's alright. :-)

Challenging Myself???

I've been immersed in thinking about shawl pins and other fun stuff to do with the Victoria Fibre Fest/Knit Out.

I'm very excited to be a "small scale" sponsor of the event.  Right down the page under the "cotton level"

We're going over to the Island as a family (well, or at least I think so).  At the market on Sunday, I'll be setting up shop with fun knitting accessories like my stitch markers, my bookmarks and cell phone charms (especially the knitting and spinning themed ones) and of course my shawl pins including a special pin for a very special design.  After a craft show that I'm involved in next weekend, I'll have about a month to get prepared for this event.  I have a lot of new goodies to prepare - stay tuned - I have some awesome stitch marker beads ready to go and a pile of lovely beads for new pins.

So, I'm thinking that my knitting time might be a little bit limited.  I should probably not commit myself to anything big.  Uli, come on you silly................. just stick to SOCKS!!!  But my head is kind of telling me this morning that I should really challenge myself and commit myself to getting Norwegian Woods done, finished and blocked in time for the Fibre Fest.  Yeah right............ Well, you heard it here!!!  I'm gonna try.  Having said that, I don't even have a new picture to show you today because it doesn't look much different yet from the last post.  I have now 2 repeats done of the first chart.  I think I need to do a total of 4 and of course, the rows are getting longer and longer and longer.

This is a wonderful project though so I'm giving myself a chance.  I bought a set of Addi Turbo Lace needles (my first pair of Addi Turbo Lace although I have lots of regular Addis).  I got those at the International Fibre Fest from my dear Shelley aka Fun Knits.  I like them a lot.  They are working well for me for this project.

So then the other thing that's occupying my mind are spinning wheels............ what am I thinking.  2 kids, full-time job, a side business that's keeping me quite busy, big upcoming events, knitting, gardening, etc. etc.... why would I want a spinning wheel?  Well, just because I've wanted one for a long time and when Brenda bought hers, I started thinking about it again, even getting my drop spindle out for a few minutes here and there.  I really know nothing about wheels but this one looks cute, doesn't it?  I can't afford it.  I don't have hubby's support either.  I can't even get him to remember the weekend that the Fibre Fest is on.  I think he's blocked it in his mind even though I talk about it very, very regularly.

So that's what's in my head.  I hate having no pictures at all in a blog post and I don't have any new knitting to show.  I've got lots of fun new charms and bookmarks and earrings in the shop but I don't always want to show those here either - avoid boring everyone..... so I'll leave you with our fish tank.... I meant to blog about that some time ago.  Here are our new friends:

1st View of the New Addition to the Family

This picture was taken the first weekend we had the fishies which was back in early April.  We started out with 3 Platies.  They were named Goldie 1, Goldie 2 and Goldie 3 and Little Miss seems to remember who is who.  Since then they have grown and we also added 4 neon tetras.  I love the colouring of the neon tetras.  We can add a few more little ones and we may do so soon.

The weather for this weekend, at least for today and tomorrow sounds wonderful so along with many other things that need to get done, we're also trying to get our plants and plant them all!!!!  Busy, busy....  Have a great weekend.

Always Cold..............

Spring has really playing a game with us this year.  I've been feeling so cold for the last few days.  Always cold hands and that chill in the air that just wouldn't let me warm up.  So when I heard the weather forecast for Thursday, I started jumping in anticipation of finally feeling warm.............. here's the icon for our Thursday forecast:

ThursdayWeather

Sunny and 28 Celcius

Oh, please, let's hope that they are correct.  We all need a bit of warmth and sunshine to warm our weary souls.

I'm slow at showing off my progress on the Norwegian Woods Shawl by Sivia Harding.  It's just a beautiful knit.  I'm really enjoying although I'm making very slow progress.  As usual, I've got a ton of things on the go so I only get to sit in quiet with my Addi Turbo lace needles in hand for short periods of time here and there when I can squeeze in some time.

Norwegian Woods - 1st Progress Shot

Oh, it's such a poor picture.  I will have to try and get a better picture.  I have now repeated 2 full repeats of the first lace chart and if I remember correctly I have 2 more repeats of that same pattern to do.  It looks kind of complicated looking at it from the perspective of one who always likes to memorize patterns.  I can't say that I've memorized the pattern but now that I've done two repeats, I've sort of figured out the logic of the pattern and can read the stitch and yarn over etc. arrangement as I start the row and quickly commit it to memory and get through the row.  The next time I'll get to that same row in the pattern repeat, I'll have to re-memorize it but there is logic to it.  It works for me!!!

I bought a very cool display piece on the weekend.  I saw it a few weeks ago and didn't buy it because on that day, I was spending money on the little Miss so I felt I couldn't afford a purchase for myself but it stuck in my head so I went back this past weekend to pick it up.  It will look lovely on my next craft show table.  What do you think?  Cool, eh?

Copper Tree

Speaking of craft show, after a long winter break, my first show is coming up on May 24th and I'm not ready for it at all.  I guess I have enough stuff but I'm right out of certain staple items that I like to have lots available of.  I'd better get going......................

I'm currently waiting for many more fun charms for my knitting bookmarks and cell phone charms/zipper pulls/bag charms.  Here is one that I just recently created:

I Love Knitting Bookmark in Purples

They are available in my Etsy shop alhtough I am sold out of this particular one right at the moment and am waiting for more charms to arrive in the mail.  I more than welcome requests of special colours though.  I'm really hoping for that package to arrive in the mail today but some silly teenagers knocked our community mailboxes over again on the weekend so the likelihood that we'll have mail delivery today is very, very slim.

I made some really neat niobium earrings yesterday, too.  The colours remind me of stonewashed denim.  I pulled out my rainbow mix of niobium rings yesterday trying to decide what colour or colour combo I might want to work with and I noticed all these different shades of blue and that inspired me to weave them into this diamond shaped pair of earrings in a weave called the European 4-in-1 weave and just picking up the blues very randomly.  I just love the results.  These earrings are so totally perfect with a pair of jeans and a white shirt.  I just listed them in my shop.

Stonewash Denim Diamond Earrings

It's Monday on what seems to be a long week already.  But it's all leading up to a long weekend so I won't complain.  Enjoy your week and have some fun doing what you love to do.

Thanks

Thanks for all the nice comments on JR.  Let me just say this experience has been tough but it is amazing how quickly little kids like that bounce back and how resilient they are.  He is basically recovered very well.  This week was a normal week with daycare and all.  We think he is eating way better and the quality of his sleep at night is just so much better.  It's obvious.  So after all the stress, it was a good thing that we made him undergo this little ordeal.

Now I turn to my toad girl................... she deserves some blog attention, too.

Toad Monkey

I thought her daycare teacher who painted up her face was very creative with the tongue trying to catch the fly on her nose.  Mind you, after all the cleaning and washing and make-up remover, I think she still has some green face paint around the edges.  She used to never have anything to do with face painting but I guess she's growing up.

Here are my socks of the month for April:

April Socks

They are just a basic sock, my own sock recipe, 64 stitches on 2.25 mm needles in an Opal Petticoat cotton.  The colours in the picture are slightly off.  The colour combination is subtle but lovely.  The colour match was hard on this yarn but I basically have it perfect except it gets out of whack right at the tip.  I'm not sure what I did but I'm not too concerned.

On Sivia Harding's Yahoo KAL group, we have set out to start her Norwegian Woods Scarf .  I love this shawl and I was set to cast on right at the start of the KAL last Sunday but time got away with me.  I also have an extremely busy weekend this weekend but I am going to carve out some time to cast on.

I've been very pre-occupied with my jewelry.  Last weekend, I had a rush to get ready for a craft show jury.  This was my first ever "big time jury" where I had to formally submit samples of my work, leave them with the jury and go back the day after the jury date to find out if I got in or not and to pick up my pieces.  I was trying so hard to stay positive and tell myself that a rejection would be no big deal but we all know, when we put our heart and soul into a project like that, rejection is utterly disappointing.  I must say thought that I passed the jury, they liked my work, they liked how I presented everything and I'm in.  This is for a 3-day show at the end of November.  I hope it will be a successful show.

As I'm doing all this jewelry, preparing for the jury and filling orders from my shop, I've been listening to lots of podcasts.  Well, last night, I was very inspired by the Yarn Thing podcast.  I listen to the podcast regularly but for some reason, the positive outlook of Marly just kind of kept me going on a very tired night.   Thanks, Marly!!!

I came up with some cute, very simple, fun for summer earrings that I want to show off:

Rainbow Moebius Hoops Purple Moebius Kidney EarringsPink and Black Moebius Kidney Earrings

These are my colour combos for now but there will be more.  These are made with large anodized aluminum rings that are combined into what's called a moebius flower.  I love the big long hoops.  Most of the time I use sterling silver or gold filled and don't mess with other stuff but these hoops are hypo-allergenic surgical steel and I've got piles of them.  I think they'll make a great, fun summer accessory.

Come check them out in my shop.  Also come back and look for more new shawl pins.  I'm going to a show tomorrow where I hope to pick up a whole pile more of the Kazuri ceramic bead that I enjoy using in my shawl pins.  I also have some other design ideas for pins that don't use those Kazuri beads.

My weekend is busy, how about yours?
